What happens if I send crypto to the wrong address on CoinGate?

Sent crypto to the wrong address on CoinGate? Here's what to do depending on where it went and whether recovery may be possible.

Updated today

In short

  • Sending crypto to the wrong address on CoinGate Gift Cards means your payment will not be linked to your order, and your order will not be fulfilled automatically.

  • If you sent to an incorrect external address (outside of CoinGate), the funds are on the blockchain and cannot be reversed - crypto transactions are irreversible once confirmed.

  • If you sent to the wrong CoinGate invoice address, contact our support team immediately with your transaction ID (TXID) - our team can investigate and, in some cases, manually match the payment.

What to do depending on where you sent the crypto

You sent crypto to a completely wrong external address

Why this happens: A typo when copying a wallet address, or accidentally sending to a different person's address, will route funds to the wrong blockchain destination.

What you should do:

  1. Check the blockchain explorer immediately - search for your TXID on mempool.space (Bitcoin) or etherscan.io (Ethereum) to confirm the transaction status.

  2. If the transaction is unconfirmed (still in the mempool), contact your wallet provider immediately - some wallets can cancel or replace unconfirmed transactions.

  3. If the transaction has confirmed, the funds are irreversibly sent to that address. CoinGate cannot retrieve funds sent to third-party addresses.

  4. If the address belongs to an exchange you use, contact that exchange's support with your TXID - some exchanges can recover misdirected funds.

You sent crypto to an old or expired CoinGate invoice address

Why this happens: You may have saved or bookmarked an address from a previous order and accidentally reused it for a new payment.

What you should do:

  1. Do not place a new order yet.

  2. Find your transaction ID (TXID) in your wallet's transaction history.

  3. Contact CoinGate Gift Cards support immediately with your TXID, the amount sent, and any order numbers you have.

  4. Our team will investigate whether the address was one of ours and whether the payment can be manually reconciled.

You sent the wrong cryptocurrency to the invoice address

Why this happens: Sending Bitcoin to an Ethereum address (or vice versa), or sending a token on the wrong network (e.g. USDT on BSC instead of USDT on Ethereum), will result in funds not being detected by our payment system.

What you should do:

  1. Check your transaction on the relevant blockchain explorer to confirm exactly what was sent and to which network.

  2. Contact CoinGate Gift Cards support with your TXID and a description of what you sent versus what was requested on the invoice.

  3. Recovery in these cases depends on the specific coin and network combination - our support team will advise you on whether recovery is possible.

You sent the correct crypto but to a slightly different address (typo)

Why this happens: Even a single character difference in a crypto address sends funds to a completely different wallet. Most wallets use checksum validation to prevent this, but it can still happen if you manually typed the address.

What you should do:

  1. Always use the "Copy" button on the invoice page - never type a crypto address manually.

  2. If you already sent, check the blockchain explorer to confirm where the transaction went.

  3. Contact CoinGate Gift Cards support with your TXID - if the address is one of ours, we can investigate further.

Important: Crypto transactions are irreversible once confirmed on the blockchain. CoinGate cannot reverse transactions sent to external addresses that do not belong to us. Always double-check the full wallet address before confirming any payment.

Frequently asked questions

Can CoinGate reverse a crypto transaction sent to the wrong address?

No - blockchain transactions are irreversible once confirmed. CoinGate can only help if the address belongs to one of our systems; we have no ability to recover funds sent to third-party addresses.

What if I sent crypto to the wrong network - can I recover it?

Recovery depends on the specific coin and network. Contact our support team immediately with your TXID and details of what network you used - in some cases recovery is possible, but it is not guaranteed.

How do I know if the address I sent to belongs to CoinGate?

Contact our support team with the address and your TXID. We can check on our end whether the address was generated by our system for one of your orders.

What information does CoinGate support need to investigate a wrong-address payment?

Please provide: your transaction ID (TXID), the wallet address you sent to, the amount and coin sent, the date and time of the transaction, and any order numbers you have.

How can I avoid sending crypto to the wrong address?

Always use the "Copy" button on the invoice page, never type addresses manually, and always verify the first and last 4-6 characters of the address before confirming your payment.
